Leadership Academy

Overview

The Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence is offering a Leadership Academy to advance and sustain cultural diversity and cultural and linguistic competence in networks supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This Academy is part of the Leadership Institute for Cultural Diversity and Cultural and Linguistic Competence funded through Cooperative Agreement #90DI0001-01-00 from the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD), Administration on Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Leadership Academy is designed to develop and enhance knowledge and skills for leadership that is directed toward change within the social-cultural contexts of the I/DD network. The Academy is intended to support individuals currently or interested in assuming leadership to advance and sustain cultural diversity and cultural and linguistic competence (CLC) within their respective settings.

PURPOSE

Addressing cultural diversity and CLC within the I/DD network requires strong and informed leadership to spur necessary changes within systems, organizations, and practice. There is a need for leaders with the commitment, energy, knowledge, and skills to do the difficult work of facilitating this change. It is important that leaders, who are willing and able to step out in the forefront of this complex set of issues, have opportunities to increase their confidence and expertise, to share with and learn from other leaders, and to get the support they need in taking on this often challenging role. This Leadership Academy, based on the highly successful Georgetown University model, is designed to offer such an opportunity.

GOALS

Upon completion of the Leadership Academy you will have:

  • Gained knowledge and skills to serve as agents of change to advance and sustain cultural diversity and CLC within your setting.
  • Recognized your capacity to lead regardless of your designated position within your organization/setting.
  • Developed strategies to sustain yourself as a leader in chaotic, difficult, and challenging environments.
  • Achieved clarity and commitment on your leadership role.
  • Acquired a leadership mindset and skill set that will enable the development of an action plan¬†to guide your efforts in effecting change for cultural diversity and CLC in your respective setting.

DESCRIPTION

The Leadership Academy is an intensive course of study comprised of 3 months of preparatory activities and a 4 day learning experience onsite in Santa Fe, New Mexico and leadership coaching for up to one year. Participants will be guided through an array of learning opportunities using multiple learning styles, including but not limited to:

  • peer group discussions and structured forums,
  • lecturettes,
  • writing assignments,
  • coaching,
  • experiential exercises, and
  • leadership assessment/inventory.

This experience will be followed by continuous learning through coaching and mentoring in the home environment for up to one year for each participant.

LIMITED TO 35 PARTICIPANTS

REGISTRATION FEE: $500.00

The registration fee covers all materials and resources necessary for the Academy including the Leadership Practices Inventory©. The fee also includes daily full breakfast, lunch, breaks, an opening dinner reception, and a closing graduation banquet.

A limited number of scholarships will be available for persons who have been accepted for this Academy who demonstrate need. Priority will be given to individuals with disabilities. Scholarships include the $500 registration fee and limited funds will be available to assist with hotel or airfare expenses, as well as other supports based on demonstrated need. The Leadership Academy will be held at Hotel Santa Fe in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico on June 19-22, 2017.
