The video Infusing Cultural & Linguistic Competence into Health Promotion Training can be used as part of a longer group training experience. It is important to consider the following when using the Infusing Cultural and Linguistic Competence into Health Promotion Training video with a group.
What is the time frame for the training activity? The DVD can be used on its own for a short training or academic class session, or it can be combined with the following activities to create a half- or full-day training. The DVD can also be used as part of a longer, more intense training activity that addresses broader issues of how to train for health promotion.
What is the level of experience and expertise of the audience? More experienced health promotion educators will have a wealth of examples to share during group discussions. If audience members are less experienced, it may be necessary to provide scenarios or examples that relate to the specific topic, population and/or chosen community.Is
there a specific topic, population, or community that
is the focus of the training? It is often
helpful to have a real situation as the focus of training
and group activities. If unavailable, consider
using case scenarios or eliciting topics and/or populations
from the audience that are of interest to them. Provide
opportunities for the audience to share experiences
and for the immediate application of content presented.
Are there cultural considerations that influence audience participation? Audience members may have differing levels of comfort in sharing personal information, speaking in front of groups or strangers, being critical of others, or disagreeing in public with a peer, group leader or expert. It is important to acknowledge that individual members will choose the extent to which they are comfortable as active speakers. At the same time, it is important that everyone in the audience have an opportunity to learn and process the information that these activities provide. Offer options for the audience to write down their responses before group sharing activities and/or to write ideas anonymously on cards or charts.
What are other considerations to assure audience participation? It is important to obtain as much information as possible about the audience before conducting the training activity. The DVD and training exercises are in English. It will be necessary to use interpretation services and to have training materials translated when audience members speak languages other than English or request this accommodation in order to participate fully. Depending on the audience, it may also be necessary to adapt the training content and materials to the cultural contexts of the identified populations and communities. A series of activities for enhancing training using the DVD ?Infusing Cultural and Linguistic Competence into Health Promotion Training? is provided for use in group training settings.
